Garage Door Panel Repair and Replacement

Panel repair addresses one section of a sectional door. Sometimes that section can be replaced. Sometimes the door is too old to match, and the honest project is a full replacement. STCRON Garage Door will tell you which one the opening supports.

Damage is not all the same job

Garage door panel replacement and garage door panel repair show up as the same search because people can see the dent and want that piece made right. The scope depends on the structure behind the paint.

Cosmetic impact

A shallow dent in the skin, often from a basketball, a hitch, or small hail, may not change how the door travels. You can leave it, or you can talk about a section if the look matters and a match exists. It is not an emergency.

Structural impact

A cracked stile, a section that bows, or hardware torn out of the skin changes the way the door hinges. That section is no longer only a cosmetic problem. It can take the track and the cables with it.

Rust and age

The bottom section takes water, fertilizer, and the splash from a Texas driveway. Rust-through at the bottom rail is a common reason a single panel is requested. If the section above it is soft too, one panel is a temporary face on a tired door.

The bottom panel specifically

Garage door bottom panel replacement includes the astragal, the bottom fixtures, and the cable pickup. It is more than a skin. If the cables are disturbed, the visit overlaps cable and track repair and has to be treated with the same caution.

Matching a section is the hard part

Garage door single panel replacement only works when the height, the profile, the color, and the hardware pattern can be matched closely enough. Manufacturers change tooling. Paint fades in the Texas sun, so a new section can be the right model and still look newer than its neighbors. We will say that before anything is ordered. We will not promise an invisible match.

If a match does not exist, garage door replacement is the straightforward path. Installing a near-miss section that will not take the hinges is worse than living with the dent for another week.

  • Measure the section height, not only the whole door.
  • Photograph the stile and the hinge layout.
  • Note windows. A top section with glass is a different part than a plain one.
  • Check whether the track was bent in the same impact.
  • Decide whether color difference is acceptable before the part is ordered.

How a panel visit goes

We identify the section, confirm the door can be secured, and only then talk about unstacking. Springs may need to be unloaded if the door has to come apart. That is not a side task for the homeowner and it is not described as a procedure here. If the spring or the cables are already compromised, the first call may be emergency repair or spring repair.

Panel replacement cost depends on whether a section is available, whether glass is involved, and whether track or fixtures were damaged with it. A number from a parts website is the part, not the labor, the spring handling, or the trip. STCRON Garage Door writes the scope for Texas after the door is seen.

Hail, and what a new section will not do

A storm can mark every section. Replacing one obviously creased panel and leaving seven milder dents is a visual choice you should make on purpose. Replacing all of them is a new door installation. We will lay those options out without calling a cosmetic dent a structural failure, and without calling a split stile cosmetic.

After the section is in, the door is cycled and the opener reverse is checked, the same close-out as garage door repair. If the rest of the hardware is dry and loud, maintenance can be scheduled rather than folded into a panic. Homes are the usual setting; a damaged commercial section is handled through commercial services because the skin and the cycle count differ.

Panel questions

Can you pop a dent out?

Metal skins do not reliably return to a flat, painted face. We do not sell dent popping as a finish. The choices are to live with a shallow dent, replace the section, or replace the door.

The color will not match. Should I still replace one panel?

Only if you prefer a sound section over a perfect blend. Faded paint is normal. We will show you the likely difference rather than promise a factory match on a ten-year-old door.

A car hit the door and it still opens. Is that safe?

Not automatically. If a stile is cracked or a hinge is loose, the door can leave the track on a later cycle. Stop using it if it looks twisted, and send a photo with your service request.

Do you replace glass in a top section?

Sometimes the glass unit can be replaced without the whole section, and sometimes the section is the part. We look at how the glass is retained before we order anything. That is still panel work, not a separate storefront glazing business.

What a section actually is

A panel, in the way homeowners use the word, is one horizontal section of a sectional door. It has a skin, stiles at the ends, and hinges that let the door bend as it meets the curve of the track. A dent in the skin can be only a dent. A crack at the stile, a bow through the section, or hardware torn out of the face means that section is no longer just a cosmetic problem. It will not carry the hinge load the way the others do, and it can be the reason a roller leaves the track six weeks after everyone agreed the dent was “not that bad.”

The bottom section is the one that takes sprinklers, fertilizer, and standing water on a Dallas driveway. Rust-through there includes the bottom seal and the fixtures the cables use. Replacing that section is closer to a balance job than to a paint job. If the cables have to be moved, the visit is planned with the same caution as cable work, and springs are not treated as something a helper can hold.

Why a perfect color match is the exception

Sun fades paint. Manufacturers change profiles. A section that is the correct height and the correct hinge pattern can still look newer than the sections above it. We will tell you that before it is ordered. If you want the door to read as one color from the street, and the fade is obvious, a full replacement is the honest cosmetic choice. If you want the structure sound and can live with a fresher bottom section, a single panel is the right spend. We will not order the part and then discover the preference at the curb.

Windows complicate the top section. Sometimes the glass unit can be replaced. Sometimes the whole top section is the part, because of how the glass is retained. We look at the retention before we promise glass-only. Hail that creases every section is not solved by replacing the one you notice first, unless you have decided the others are acceptable. We will stand in the driveway and count them with you. We will not call a shallow hail mark structural, and we will not call a split stile cosmetic.

The limit of a panel repair

If the track was bent in the same impact, the section is only half the job. If the door is an obsolete profile and nothing on the market will take the hinges, we stop and talk about a new door rather than forcing a near-miss that will bind. Installation of that new door is described on the installation page. Until a decision is made, a door with a cracked stile should not be cycled “just to get the car out” if it is twisting. Use emergency repair when the opening cannot be left, and send a photo of the whole door plus the damaged section with your request.

Decide the goal before the part is ordered

There are two honest goals. One is structural: the section has to hold hinges and keep the door in the track. The other is visual: the door should read as one surface from the street. A single replacement section is good at the first goal when a match exists. It is only accidentally good at the second, because new paint next to faded paint shows. If your goal is visual and the door is uniformly tired, say so and we will talk about a full door before a section is on order. If your goal is to stop a split stile from becoming an off-track door, a section is the right tool even if the color is a step newer.

Impact from a vehicle is a third case. The skin may be the least of it. The track, the bottom fixture, and the cable on that side take the hit too. We will not quote a skin and discover the track on installation day without having warned you. Send the photo of the whole door, not only the close-up of the crease. If the door still cycles but twists as it comes down, stop using it. A twisting door is how rollers leave the guide. Emergency service is appropriate when you cannot leave it that way overnight. A shallow dent that does not change travel can wait, and waiting is allowed. Not every mark is a project.

Say whether you are solving structure or appearance

A split stile is a structure problem and may justify a section even if the new paint is brighter than the old. A faded but solid door is an appearance problem, and a single section may make the mismatch more obvious. Tell us which result you want before a part is ordered. Send a photo of the entire door plus the damaged area, and mention if a vehicle hit it, because the track and cable on that side may be part of the same impact. If no matching section exists, we will say so and talk about a full door instead of forcing a near-miss into the opening.

Send a photo of the whole door and the damaged section

Include the ZIP code. We will say whether a section is worth pursuing or whether replacement is the cleaner scope.
